Lostine-Tavern_Logo-Opt1Update, May 15: Wow, we are here! The end of the project, and looking to surpass $30,000 if we’re lucky by 9 p.m. PT. Already, we are so fortunate to have received tons of TLC from our community, our family & friends and the media.  We are moving as fast as we can toward our much-anticipated opening and will let everyone know as soon as possible when we can eat & drink together!

Historic Lostine Tavern

The heart of a town, a community and a region is the gathering place. For over 70 years, the Lostine Tavern (known regionally as the LT) has been a favorite social center for the people who live in and visit the stunning Wallowa Valley in eastern Oregon. For burgers and beers, taco night and pie socials, it’s where ranchers sit over coffee and talk cattle prices, where travelers sip a pint after adventures in the mountains, where boys meet girls…

We are taking this historic building back to its roots, creating a true farm-to-table tavern. Working with ranchers and growers, we will celebrate local food traditions on our menu using regional ingredients from beef to beets and berries. Our aim is to cultivate a local food system.

We will continue the popular taco night, host special dinners and cooking classes anf become, once again, the vital gathering place for the entire community. By restoring the building from the ground up, we will create a functional and welcoming place for everyone who lives in and visits this valley, and in doing so, revitalize the historic downtown of Lostine.

Our mission reaches far beyond reopening the doors of the tavern. This is a project for rural America, for small food producers, for sustainable agriculture and for healthy communities.

We are grateful for your interest and support to restore the Lostine Tavern, the heart of this great community!

On Saturday, January 18, 2014 more than 150 community members joined Peter & Lynne at the LT to enjoy chili made from grassfed beef and to hear about the plans for the renovations in progress. Credit: Elane Dickenson/Chieftain.

Please join us in this community-supported project that will directly support small farms, sustainable agriculture, rural development and good food for all. And join us at our table when we open in May!

The Bottom Line
The Lostine Tavern is undergoing a complete renovation from floor to ceiling. While the building’s owner is covering much of the infrastructure renewals (e.g. new roof, septic, water, heat and electrical systems), the business owners have a big responsibility to equip, furnish and stock the soon-to-reopen Lostine Tavern. Your money will buy the reclaimed wood for the tables, the enamelware plates and LT pint glasses, the gas range to cook it on and the dishwasher to clean it all up.

With every $100+ donation, your initials will be branded into the reclaimed wood around the new bar.

new bar
The money raised through Change Funder will directly contribute to the building renovations and the restaurant build out, now well underway.

Owners, Lynne Curry, Lisa Armstrong-Roepke and Peter Ferre are investing big dollars of their own in this project. They have received support from the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office to restore the facade as well as assistance from the Northeast Oregon Economic Development District and the people of Wallowa and Union counties. Still, the Lostine Tavern cannot succeed without your help and those people you know who love rural America and support small family farms and ranches.

Your donation will allow us to:
• Complete the build out of an efficient but modest production kitchen, including a $27,000 hood system
• Purchase kitchen equipment, including a smoker for house made charcuterie
• Create a custom bar from 100-year old salvaged wood from the Eastern Oregon Lumber Mill
• Furnish a welcoming dining room where families, friends, couples and travelers enjoy great food and company

Where in tarnation is Lostine, Oregon?
Lostine town sign

In the heart of the Wallowas, named one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon*, Lostine is one of the four towns you’ll pass through on state highway 82 on the road to Wallowa Lake. The town of Lostine was established in 1884 in a magnificent and fertile valley where the Nez Perce tribe lived, hunted and fished along the Wallowa River. It remains a rich agricultural region and a place for discovers and seekers of all kinds.

*As designated by Travel Oregon, a great resource for learning more about eastern Oregon travel opportunities.

Tragedy in Lostine, February 2014
At 10:22 a.m. on Saturday, February 8th a fire broke out in downtown Lostine. Within hours, the intense fire had burned the South Fork Grange and Norton Welding—two adjoining, historic structures—to the ground. All the while, volunteer firefighters protected the Lostine Tavern by spraying water on the south wall. The LT suffered no water or smoke damage, and we are so grateful.

While the South Fork Grange and Norton Welding were destroyed, the Lostine Tavern (on the far right in the photo) was saved.

We are more eager than ever to get the Lostine Tavern open on schedule in order to help rebuild this special town and to support these key enterprises, especially the grange, which had no fire insurance. Small towns like Lostine are precious, and we all benefit—as residents and as tourists—when they thrive.

Restoring the original facade, including the transom windows, creating outdoor seating—along with bicycle racks, hitching posts and motorcycle parking—are all part of the plans for revitalizing downtown Lostine, Oregon.
